During the pandemic, digital assistants—HSE students who have been trained by IT Office specialists—successfully handled issues related to HSE’s transition to remote work and teaching. Now the University is using their help to tackle a whole new set of challenges.  

What professions in Russia are considered ‘dirty’? Do computers have empathy? What happens when the brain incorrectly predicts how we feel? The answers to these and other questions were tackled at the final round of the HSE Science Battles, which was held online for the first time this year. The Russian Academy of Science’s Institute of Sociology recently published a collective monograph on socio-technical barriers to the production, distribution and consumption of digital technologies entitled Adventures in Technology: Barriers to Digitalization in Russia. A number of chapters were written by HSE University researchers Konstantin Glazkov, Olga Logunova and Alisa Maximova. 

The HSE International Laboratory of Statistical and Computational Genomics has launched an online school for applied population genetics and analysis. The school does not require special knowledge in biology and is aimed at students, graduate students, and postdocs in mathematics, physics, and computer programming.

Animation artists Katya Mikheeva, Yulia Kulikova, and Ekaterina Zhuzhleva (Design, ‘20) created animated video clips outlining cinema patron rules for Moskino, an organization that manages 14 cinemas in Moscow. For Roman Nesterov, PhD student and research assistant at the Laboratory of Process-Aware Information Systems (PAIS Lab), working remotely had already been the norm long before this spring. As student of a cotutelle PhD programme, he is constantly working with colleagues from Italy. We spoke with Roman about his research and about how one can pursue joint doctoral studies with another university abroad.

Nikita Pershukov, a 4th-year bachelor’s student studying Information Science and Computation Technology at the HSE Tikhonov Moscow Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM HSE), has placed among the Russian national team’s expanded membership for the WorldSkills Russia competition in the ‘Network and System Administration’ category. In an interview with the HSE New Service, Nikita talked about the team selection process and what lies ahead for him and his fellow teammates.

On September 21, 2020, the HSE University - Perm will hold its eighth iCare — International Conference on Applied Research in Economics (and Finance and Management). This year, the event will be held online for the first time, and participants will not only be able to give presentations, but will also have the opportunity to talk in informal ‘virtual rooms’.
