From pre-Petrine times to Soviet neighbourhoods, students from Russia, Brazil, Turkey, China, and Germany spent three weeks studying the multi-layered history of St Petersburg not just in the classroom but also on the city streets. The participants of the International Summer School at HSE University–St Petersburg visited imperial residences and Soviet communal apartments, Orthodox and Lutheran churches, the historical centre and residential areas.

Forty students from sixteen countries came to St Petersburg to study political science, the Russian language, history, and economics. Today, we are excited to share the story of Giovanny Simon Machado—a graduate of the Master’s programme 'Applied and Interdisciplinary History "Usable Pasts"'. Now, he is a professor at the Department of Social Work at the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil. This May, Prof. Machado came back to Russia as a participant of the HSE University–St Petersburg International Partners’ Week 2025.
